GREEN RIVER COMMONS
TOUR TO LEARN WHY, AND SEE OTHER ZERO-ENERGY HOMES FOR SALE
Last month, A Californian returned to Greenfield to move into a zero-energy condo at the Green River Commons, on Deerfield Street in Greenfield."I have wanted to live more lightly on the Earth for many years and the Green River Commons condominiums offer me the opportunity to do that at an affordable price," said Dorothea Sotiros, a new condo owner.
"I have also ordered solar panels to be installed on my roof, which will make as much energy as I need for my heating, cooling, lights, cooking, washing and an electric car that I plan to buy in the next few years -- and it is all affordable, comfortable, and beautiful!"
Sotiros went on to explain that purchasing the solar panels will not add to her expenses -- and in fact will reduce her expenses in the years to come. Because of the design and quality construction of the homes, designed and built by Wright Builders of Northampton, MA, utility bills will be incredibly low. They are estimated to cost between $800 - $1100 per year, depending on whether the condo has one or two-bedrooms.
PV Squared Solar, installers of the solar system, will be on hand to explain that if Sotiros takes out a 10-year solar loan to pay for the solar system, her monthly payments will be about the same as the estimated utility costs would have been without solar. After 10 years, Sotiros will own her solar system and all the electricity generated by her system will be free for decades to come.
During the 60-minute tour, attendees will visit with three groups:
- Wright Builders Inc., and developer Green River Homes LLC will explain what is so special about the design and engineering of these homes;
- PV Squared Solar and the UMassFive College Federal Credit Union will explain the economics of purchasing the solar system;
- Dorothea Sotiros will talk about why she is so excited about the home she recently purchased. Wanda Mooney of Coldwell Banker Upton-Massamont Realtors, MJ Adams, Greenfield Director of Economic & Community Development, and Stacey Pinardi from the Freedom Credit Union will be on hand to explain the cost and process of purchasing one of the other condos, some of which are market rate, and others affordable for families with up to 80% of median incomes.
After the tour attendees are invited to enjoy snacks, talk further with the presenters, and pick up literature.
