Greening Greenfield Highlighted in FCCDC News
If you know Greenfield, you probably know Millers Meadow. It’s the flat expanse of city-owned land on between the Green River and Colrain Road that used to be a mobile home park. Before that, it was a farm. But while flooding destroyed the mobile homes, some Greenfield residents see a bright future for that patch of land.
Greening Greenfield, which the Franklin County CDC fiscally sponsors, hired Peter Wackernagel to draw up a schematic to add forest and meadow habitat to the area. Peter’s design was used to apply for a Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Action Grant through the City of Greenfield, and the city was awarded $38,000 to implement the plan.
Peter leads the Youth Climate Action program through the Brick Church in Montague and youth in that program will lead planting events at Millers Meadow, adding trees to the slope that leads from Colrain Road to the flat expanse and meadow vegetation. “We’re building native habitat,” Peter said. “The big idea is, this is conservation land close to downtown Greenfield and residential neighborhoods. This site will be a great way for people in Greenfield to have a natural experience by the Green River.”
The Franklin County CDC is proud of Greening Greenfield for initiating this project and is happy to be able to support its activities by providing bookkeeping and administrative support as its fiscal sponsor. This relationship allows Greening Greenfield to provide seed money so that transformative projects, like this one, can happen.
